Cesária Évora, also known as the Barefoot Diva, was considered to be the best performer of mornas, Cape Verde’s national music. “Our music is a lot of things,” she said. ”Some say it’s like the blues, or jazz. Others says it’s like Brazilian or African music, but no one really knows. Not even the old ones.” Cesária Évora died today, aged 70, after a long period of ill-health.
